As artificial intelligence systems make increasingly complex decisions, an important question emerges: Can we truly understand how these systems reach their conclusions?
In my article “Intelligent but Opaque: The Black Box of Artificial Intelligence and the Explainability Revolution,” published in Erzurum Birikim on October 14, 2026, I examine the AI black-box problem and the role of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI).
Drawing on explainability methods such as SHAP and LIME, I emphasize that explaining a model's prediction does not necessarily establish that the decision is correct, fair, or trustworthy. Through examples from healthcare, banking, recruitment, and other decision-support applications, I discuss the importance of scientific validation, accountability, and human oversight.
The article argues that the real success of AI lies not merely in generating powerful predictions, but in working alongside human intelligence in a transparent, auditable, and responsible manner.
